One of the few fashion classic pieces every woman should own, the trench coat, is getting an upgrade.  It is no longer just a staple nor is it only offered in timeless beige.  This silhouette is popping up in new colors, fabrics and even prints.  From wool plaid to bold piping on transparent styles, there are many options to incorporate this updated outerwear piece into your closet.

Trench coats have been around since 1914 and have never really gone out of style.  Before Burberry made them stylish and a classic staple, they were more utilitarian serving as outwear for soldiers in World War I.  While fighting in the rain, the trenches became too heavy and were restricting the soldiers’ movements.  Tom Burberry created a unique water-resistant fabric, gabardine, and starting incorporating it into trench coats.  This lightweight fabric made for much easier movement and was used throughout World War II as well.

SHEIN had a pop-up store in SoHo last month around fashion week.  It was super crowded as to be expected but since I had missed the last pop-up I decided to walk in, thinking I was going to walk right back out.  I am a devoted online shopper.  It is rare that I will go into a store and actually walk out with something, unless it’s Sephora. Other than than, I order just about everything online!

I browsed the first half of the store and just as I was about to leave, I spotted the trench that I am wearing above.  If the price wouldn’t sell me, this unique plaid print did.  I tried it on and immediately fell in love.

The plaid print felt fresh and sophisticated, but still versatile.  The quality is great, like you wouldn’t think that I paid $30 for it!

I also loved the length because when worn closed, my shoes are all that’s visible, allowing to wear an attention-grabbing pair.

Although we are seeing lower temps in New York, I considered this to be one of my fall transitional looks.  You can definitely replicate this look for cooler weather by adding tights and swapping the tank top for a turtleneck or chunky sweater!

This plaid trench will definitely will be my go-to outwear piece this fall.  I can’t wait to dress it down and wear with sneakers.  I also would love to try out a transparent trench.  It’s been on my wish list since I saw a few in the spring and thought it was the perfect outwear for rainy days.  You know, functional but fashion.

Will you be introducing an updated trench coat into your closet this season?
