I love denim. Jean jackets, jean skirts, skinny jeans, distressed jeans, wide leg jeans, culottes.. I’m here for all of it! Denim is so versatile and can easily be dressed up or down based on choice of shoes and accessories. I love that denim is always being revamped, like the embroidery trend that we saw in fall/winter and are seeing again for spring/summer. I loved having fun ironed-on patches on my jean jackets when I was younger, so being able to have floral embroidery on my skinny jeans now is so nostalgic. With that being said, you can never go wrong with a denim on denim look. The key to mastering that look is balance, especially when it comes to the weight and washes.
Don’t: Wear one shade of denim head to toe.
Do: Mix shades of denim.
Don’t pull a Britney-and-Justin-matching-all-denim-look, circa early 2000’s. (Don’t get me wrong, I loved them together but those matching outfits weren’t their finest moment.) You don’t want to look like you’re heading to the rodeo. You want to look chic! In the look I am wearing above, I paired a light blue chambray button-down shirt with a pair of medium wash distressed jeans. They are not the same shades but they compliment each other well. I could have also worn a pair of black jeans or a pair of dark wash jeans for a slimming effect. Mixing denim is fun and there are endless possibilities!
Don’t: Wear equally heavy denim pieces.
Do: Pay attention to proportions.
The chambray button-down shirt I chose to wear is a very lightweight fabric and is not the same weight as my distressed jeans. In this case, the weights of my shirt and jeans are balanced. If I had worn a denim button-down shirt of a thicker fabric with the same pair of jeans, the overall look would be heavy, bulky and not flattering on my body. You also want to have the option to tuck in your shirt without fabric hanging over! To reiterate, a lightweight top paired with a denim bottom and you have a clean, chic look.
Don’t: Accessorize with busy pieces.
Do: Accessorize, keeping it fun but minimal.
On my hands and wrists, I wore a couple of rings, my everyday watch and a bright bangle to match the pop of color on my lips. My bag of choice was a fringed Zara clutch that easily transforms this look from a day-to-night outfit. To keep the look chic, I wore my favorite camel coat, the perfect neutral, and fun pair of strappy leopard print heels. Nude heels will also seal the deal!
A denim on denim look doesn’t just need or have to be a denim shirt and a pair of jeans. You can also pair a denim shirt with a denim skirt or a jean jacket over a denim dress. There are so many pairings and outfits to be created! As long as the denim pieces are balanced and your accessories are minimal, you’ve nailed it! I hope these tips were helpful and I can’t wait to see you pull off a great all-denim look!
